Alcantara is a Mediterranean lemon ceramic collection made in Deruta, a hill town and comune in the province of Perugia in the Umbria region of central Italy. Deruta remains known for its ceramics and as the centre of refined majolica products. The local clay is perfect for ceramics, where production began in the early middle ages, but found its artistic peak in the 15th and early 16th century, with highly characteristic local styles of majolica. Deruta, with Gubbio and Urbino, continue to produce some of the finest Italian majolica.
The Alcantara pattern, is a vibrant Mediterranean design inspired by the popular lemons of Italy. Medieval Italian cooks realised that lemons were more than just a pretty scent; they used them in sweet and savoury dishes. Lemons did more than make food delicious; their high acidity also helped preserve foods. Lemons are found in many designs throughout Italy and worldwide today.
Each piece is handmade and hand painted by talented artisans and are the result of authentic and original ceramic craftsmanship.
