Raffaellesco Lucky Dragon Italian Majolica Ceramic Oil & Vinegar Set

Handcrafted in Deruta Italy 🇮🇹

Raffaellesco is a unique ceramic collection made in Deruta, a hill town and comune in the province of Perugia in the Umbria region of central Italy. Deruta remains known for its ceramics and as the centre of refined majolica products. The local clay is perfect for ceramics, where production began in the early middle ages, but found its artistic peak in the 15th and early 16th century, with highly characteristic local styles of majolica, In the 16th century Deruta produced the so-called "Rafaellesque" ware, decorated with fine arabesques and grottesche on a fine white ground. Deruta, with Gubbio and Urbino, continue to produce some of the finest Italian majolica.

The Raffaellesco pattern was inspired by Raphael’s 16th century frescoes in the Vatican palace. The Dragon which is the central motif of the pattern is believed to symbolise a benevolent deity who bestowed good luck and fair winds to seagoing merchants, The sea creature is said to have rescued sailors trapped in a dead calm by blowing on the trapped ship's sails, thus the puffs of wind steaming from the dragon's mouth. Today, many Italians believe that having a piece of Raffaellesco in your home brings blessings and good fortune.
